Within the Digital Humanities world there are two open source applications that stand out when it comes to building a Digital Collection. The First is called Omeka. It's a lightweight application that can run easily within a Basic shared hosting account. It stores the objects within a directory on the server along with the metadata being stored in MySQL. It has some plugins and theme's and can be customized to make a collection of exhibits.
On the higher end is an application called Fedora Commons. It is a special kind of database that allows you to store the objects and the metadata within the specialized database filesystem. It's not like a traditional relational database (ie. MySQL). Since this application is able to handle massive collections, it typically needs to be run on it's own virtual server.
A Fedora Commons Server alone won't get you a full site. This is just the database server so you still need a "front end" website to present your Digital Collections. This is where Islandora comes in. Islandora is a set of many Drupal modules that turn Drupal from a basic content management system (CMS) into a full featured fedora database presentation interface. By utilizing Drupal, it allows you to capitalize on the vast amounts of modules and theme's that are out in the Drupal community.
